"Big" by Khadija Alhayki
My mother says I am a “big girl” now,
And I should act like one.
My grandma says that too,
But no one told me how!
But what does a “big girl” mean?
What do I need to do?
Does big mean I can drive?
Does it mean no school?
Credit cards?
Independence?
I don’t have a clue!
In the grown up’s dictionary,
“Big” means an “unlicensed adult”.
I am no longer a child.
I don’t belong there
But...
I am not yet an adult
I guess I am only “a big girl”

ReplyDeleteLovely poem. When we grow up, our families expect too much from us and perhaps because they do believe in us, they anticipate that we can unlock all the doors in our own without any hints.
ReplyDeleteDon't tell me about such a feeling. At least, it created a poet of fine skills.
